Peter Lalor was a passionate speaker, who motivated the miners with rhetoric and convincing them to stand up for their rights. He was willing to stand with the miners against the soldiers, and remained in the heart of the battle, ultimately losing one of his arms as a result of wounds. He rallied the women to create a flag worthy to symbolise the miners' rights, now known as the Eureka flag. At the time, the Eureka rebellion was considered a failure because of the bloodshed and the deaths of over 20 miners. However, in the long run, Lalor's motivation brought a number of changes to the goldfields:

  • Lalor became a representative of the miners in the government. His work there allowed miners to earn the right to vote
  • The monthly licence fee was abolished, and replaced with a much more affordable yearly Miners' Right.
