There are a couple of theories.

From Romulus, the mythological founder of the city. IMPO, Romulus got his name from the city not the other way around.

From Ruma, the etruscan word for "teat", a possible reference to the wolf who raised Romulus and Remus, or the hills upon which Rome was built.

From Rhòme, the greek word for "strength".

From Rumon, an ancient name for the Tiber, see also latin Ruo and greek Rhèo, both meaning "flow".
