Joan of Arc fought in the war between France and England, and was eventually captured by the English and executed as an enemy of England. Religious issues were raised as well - this was a period of history in which Europeans were obsessed with religious issues - but it was ultimately about the war.

Joan had embarrassed and humiliated the British with her victories and they wanted revenge. They thought that the French army would become disheartened by Joan's death and the British could gain the upper hand in the conflict once again.
