Mississippi, like all of the other Southern and Midwestern states, suffered from falling farm prices throughout the Depression. This caused many small farms to fail and default on bank loans. In turn, banks failed and families lost life savings. One result was an extreme loss of income for blacks, as employers could not afford traditionally black jobs. Farmers who did not lose the farm often had to do great amounts of work themselves rather than hiring workers; they also had to raise their own food crops rather than "cash crops" like cotton or tobacco.
