After the Battle of Shiloh in 1862, Major General Henry W. Halleck decided that since he was unable to totally dismiss General Grant, Halleck would personally take over Grant's army. Halleck was the Union general in charge of the Western Theater for the US and was General Grant's supervising officer. Fully aware that Grant's army was made greatly vulnerable due to its lack of entrenchments, Halleck proceeded with all caution in his pursuit of Rebel forces concentrating in Corinth, Mississippi. This made his progress slow but safe. And, Halleck may well have been aware that ancient Roman legions on the march, ended each day by building a defensive encampment in order to protect itself from enemy raids. There progress was also slow but safe. With that said, if the Romans were making use of their roadway system, they may have been moving faster than Halleck who had to travel on rough country roads.
