This question is incorrectly categorized as WW2. Tanks first saw action in WW1, developed by the British forces. The idea apparently was from E.D. Swanton, who thought about armoring Holt tractor so they could cross the enemy trenches
Because In WW1 soldiers were running across trenches and getting constantly getting killed in mass numbers by Machine guns so engineers devices a way to keep soldiers alive, and stop the enemy and destroy their trenches.
No not like in WW1 however there were many tunnels dug by the north to aid in the fight against invading forces
The tanks in WW1 were not very strong. They overheated inside a lot so you could not stay in them for very long. The outside metal layer was very thin and you could shoot through it in the first models. The tanks were effective in some ways. During WW1 Trench warfare was popular, (Trench warfare was people would dig trenches and climb in and shoot at the other trench) and it made it easy for the Tanks to drive on top of the Trenches and squish everyone inside. (some early models were not heavy enough) I hope this helps!
