William Golding was in command of a rocket ship in the Royal navy during the World War 2. He ordered the destruction of German ships and submarines and he shelled German troops from sea during the D-Day landings. He soon realised that what he was doing was wrong and believed that war was a great injustice. His eyes were opened as he saw and heard and experienced many things throughout the war. He hated the cruel and inhumane treatment of the Jews in the concentration camps, the mistreatment of the Japanese' prisoners.

He also hated the mass bombing by the American and British on innocent civillians. He criticised the mask response, "we have right on our side" as he started to understand how savage humans could be and he felt that they were hypocrites, combatting war with war.
