He was killed by an arrow that was shot by Sir Walter Tirel (modern spelling "Tyrell") while they were hunting in the New Forest, on the 2nd of August 1100. No-one but Tyrell actual saw what happened.

The circumstances are murky, to say the least. Tyrell fled to France without even calling other members of the hunting party.

William's younger brother Henry Beauclerk got to Winchester in suspiciously short time and seized the crown jewels and Royal treasure, pre-empting the eldest brother Robert and making himself king. Some historians have speculated the Tyrell was an assassin working for Henry, others that he was the agent of a conspiracy of churchmen or nobles.
