If the child was a wealthy plantation child he/she had a tutor for their education and would spend part of the day with this person. Many also had an African American nanny who helped raise the children for the parents. Poor children would attend a local school if there was one and they would be expected to help the family with chores on the family farm. Girls would help mom cook, make butter, do laundry, babysit younger children, feed the chickens, milk the cow, sew, help with housework, gather eggs and other foods. The boys were expected to help the father do the farm work, plow, plant crops, mend fences, herd cows or cattle and to feed them, clean barns, cut wood, bring in water, pick crops, and do other chores. A slave child would be put to work as young as two years old and many were sold away from their families never to see them again.
