How did the underground railroad free slaves?

The Underground Railroad provided safe houses known as Stations and guides called Conductors to assist runaway slaves to escape to safety over regular routes from within the Deep South to Northern Cities or even into Canada.

News of a "Conductor' or leader of the underground railroad - like Harriet Tubman - would travel through the slaves by word of mouth or song. Songs like 'Follow the Drinking Gourd' would tell a slave where to meet to start their journey on the underground railroad. Once they escaped their farm or plantation and met up with other slaves, the conductor would lead them to safe houses. These were houses owned by people against slavery who were willing to face persecution and possibly even death to help a slave escape. The houses had many nooks and crannies and hidden rooms and whatnot to hide slaves during the day until they could travel again. The houses would have signals to tell the conductors and their 'passengers' that the house was safe/full/dangerous/etc. The slaves would travel along the route of safe houses usually all the way up to Canada where they would be free and could not be caught. However, if a slave decided to begin their journey on the underground railroad they could not turn back. For the safety of the conductors, slaves, and safe houses, a person was either freed or shot so they would not disclose secret information.
