How did Caesar and Cleopatra meet?

There are various versions of how Cleo and Julius met. Some say she was hidden in a rolled up carpet, some say that she was rolled up in a reed mat and others say that she was concealed in a bag of laundry. At any rate, she had to be smuggled in because if she came publicly to Alexandria she would have been killed, as she was at war with her brother at the time.

Caesar and Cleopatra met when Caesar summoned her to Alexandria in order to bring her and her brother together to stop their civil war. However Cleopatra could not freely enter the city for fear of being killed on sight, (the Alexandrians were on the side of her brother) so she devised a scheme to sneak into the palace. Some writers say she had herself wrapped in a rug, others say it was a laundry sack, still others say it was a reed mat, at any rate, the bundle was delivered to Caesar's quarters and Cleopatra popped out.

Most likely in Rome, Cleopatra went to Rome to with Julius Caesar and as Caesar closest confidant and friend he acted as a go between.

She, with great impatience, before she received the letter, asks if Antony were well, and instead of an answer he gives her the letter; and, as she was opening it, took her about the neck and kissed her. This little story of many of the same nature, I give as a specimen.
