At this time there was something called the Blacklist, where they would put the names of famous people that where believed to be communist or spys for the Russians. At this time Americans also feared bombing. They would have weekly bomb drills where they would duck and cover. Also with all of the disagremments between the USA and the USSR, they where afraid that nuclear war would break out.
