Construction on the Cumberland Road began in Cumberland, Maryland, because it served as a strategic starting point for westward expansion, linking the Eastern U.S. to the frontier. The location provided access to the Allegheny Mountains and facilitated trade and travel to the Ohio River Valley. Initiating the road in Cumberland allowed for better logistics and support for settlers moving west, rather than starting at the Mississippi River, which was already more accessible by waterway.
