Fairly well. Not well enough, of course, for feudalism to be the dominant type of government in the world. Feudalism worked with a king ruling over his barons, who ruled over his nobles, who ruled over his peasants.

Feudalism had many purposes - protection & safety (through knights); wealth, money, income, crops, food, etc. for the Lords; security of their position for the vassals (and king) through the rigid social class system; and so forth.
Feudalism came to Europe because after the Roman Empire fell, many smaller empires took over Europe and many didn't get along together. So, people built castles and created the feudal law to protect themselves from invaders, which was the start of the Middle Ages.
Feudalism declined because of several factors. The society could no longer be controlled by the Church and its kings because the printing press had been developed allowing the general public to learn and think. When people can think they get ideas and that makes it harder to control them. Next, exploring had started bring new ideas, inventions, and foods into the old World from the New World. People were beginning to move around and learn about other people. All of this added to the decline of a feudal society.
In India. They did not have the resources to sustain their ability to supply for people, therefore their feudalism was not strong whatsoever.
People knew their roles in a rigid class system.
Black death brought an end to feudalism. People did not like feudalism.

The middle ages began when Rome fell so there was no Roman authority at all to protect or help the people who were living in the time. Barbarians raided at will, took people as slaves and sold them into slavery, demanded tribute, killed, and life was in chaos. Out of the chaos came feudalism. This is a system where the strongest prevail and everyone else does what they are told.
During the middle ages, knights were expected to be chivalrous and truthful. they were to serve and protect the people, the monarch and the country.
