The middle ages began when Rome fell so there was no Roman authority at all to protect or help the people who were living in the time. Barbarians raided at will, took people as slaves and sold them into slavery, demanded tribute, killed, and life was in chaos. Out of the chaos came feudalism. This is a system where the strongest prevail and everyone else does what they are told.
