I wouldn't say it has impacted history, but it has been around for a long time. Columbus's crew wore a jean type of material because it held up well in harsh conditions. In the 1860's Levi Strauss came up with a better jean by adding brads to the seams and allowed the gold miners to wear a better jean. In the 1940's jeans were seen as a sign of a rebel after the movie came out "Rebel without a Cause" was made. The 1960's saw jeans as part of the hippie movement and some had peace signs on them or the American flag on them. Again, they were seen as part of a youth movement. Since then they have moved on to the runway and can be bought in every color and style. I think they are more a reflection of the society and not having an impact on the society.
