Kasturba Gandhi died of pneumonia. She had chronic bronchitis the last few years before her death and it went worse and she contracted pneumonia. Now she could have been saved but her husband, Mohandas Gandhi refused to give her Penicillin injections which were the only treatment then because they were 'British' and not Indian.

It's interesting to note that some months after this Gandhi himself contracted malaria and this time had no moral issues about taking Quinine (the first treatment for Malaria in those days) even though it wasn't Indian. In fact he even had appendectomy on his appendix even though it was British again. Though, it is important to note that Quinine is a natural cure.

One more thing... Gandhi's son Devdas had an argument at the time of his mother's illness because he wanted to give her the life saving Penicillin. But Gandhi still refused to give it to his wife.
