After the Mexican Revolution (1910-1921) most of the former haciendas and plantations became communal lands known as ejidos. Although this appeased the population that fought during the revolution, the investment needed to make these lands productive was never taken into account; most were given to peasants who knew how to grow crops but did not have the financial means to make good use of them or to improve their productivity. The results were the endemic poverty among rural communities and subsistence agriculture that has survived to the present day, with the consequent migration to the cities or to the United States in search of a better life.
