They usually didn't wash the outer garments they wore and only the underwear every so often. To do a wash was hard work. Water had to be heated, a lye/ash/fat soap was used and the clothing put into the pot of hot water. Large paddles were used to stir the clothing in the water, but the clothing had to be removed by hand and wrung out. This would cause the women doing this to have the skin on their hands to become red and sore because of the lye in the soap and the hot water. The clothing at this point was hung to dry.
