Napoleon planned to conquer Russia simply by just defeating the Russian army by invading Russia. However, the Russians kept retreating and used their homeland to their advantage, even by treating it poorly. They torched the Earth and set fire to forests and cities which distracted, killed, and threw the French off course. Once the French reached Moscow, they were welcomed by ruins and fires as the Russians set their own capital on fire. They were then trapped here for the winter.
