The Military was almost OUT OF A JOB! Base closures commenced almost immediately. Operation Desert Shield (1990) and Operation Desert Storm (1991) were timed to save the service from near extinction. After those campaigns were successfully completed, Congress passed news laws allowing the US Military to conduct Law Enforcement duties.

Today the US Mililtary and Law Enforcement WORK TOGETHER.

On television, ever notice how you can't tell the difference from an armored Kevlor wearing Soldier and Law Enforcement (Sheriff/Police/FBI/DEA/ATF/Border Patrol/Customs/Highway Patrol/Home Land Security/etc.)? That's because they all now:

1. Wear the same uniforms

2. Use the same vehicle/helicopters/armored cars

3. Use the same weapons

4. Do the same work

Only the "title' is different (Sheriff, Police, Marine, Soldier, FBI, etc).

This was the result of the end of the cold war.

The Cold War. The two superpowers that were in the world as of 1945, Soviet and the United States, were governed by two different styles of government, Communism and Democracy. The Soviets, wanting more countries to trade with (its normal trade being to democratic countries, who boycotted all trade with the U.S.S.R), wanted the government type of Communism to spread into other countries that were either democratic or republics. Countries that were democratic, particularly the United States, wanted to stop this. The Soviets began funding and arming Communist, forces in different countries. these led to the reign of Fidel Castro in Cuba, the Vietnam War, Korean War, and a Communist government in China, among others.
