There was a great deal of distrust between the European powers prior to World War I. As a result, various alliances had been established that vowed to assist each other in the case of attack. This is why the war became so large, people were getting into the fight mainly because of their treaties. England and France, for instance, were not happy about the power Germany had been acquiring and wanted the chance to slap it down.
