Paul undertook three missionary journeys and established churches in cities in modern day Syria, Turkey and Greece.

Paul was the most prolific Christian writer of the apostolic age. Fourteen of the twenty seven books of the New Testament, about half of the Acts of the Apostles and seven of the Epistles were written by him. He preached to both the Jews and the gentiles (non-Jews) and elaborated a theology which both distinguished Christianity from Judaism and made it accessible to the gentiles, and thus played a fundamental role in its spread around the Roman Empire.

Originally the Christians were a Jewish sect. They believed that Jesus was God's promised Messiah to his chosen people (the Jews). They focused on sharing this news with other Jews. They also followed Jewish law and customs. Paul, instead, argued that, through Jesus, God had extended salvation to Gentiles. Salivation would occur through faith, rather than though observing rituals and following the Jewish law. Jesus' death and resurrection brought a change in humanity's relationship with God, one in which faith, rather than behaviour, was the central element.

The righteousness from God has made itself known apart from the law and that this righteousness comes through faith in Jesus to all who believe. Justification (clearing the believer of the guilt and penalty of sin) is a gift of God, bestowed by faith. The faithful have been joined with Jesus and freed from sin. Believers can be assured of their hope in salvation by having been freed from the bondage of sin and that the promise of salvation is open to everyone since everyone has sinned.

The Gospel transforms believers and their behaviour .This transformation is a "renewing of your mind. Christians are no longer under the Law of Moses but under the grace of God. Through our renewed minds, we know "almost instinctively" what God wants of us. The law now provides an "objective standard" for judging progress in the "lifelong process" of our mind's renewal. Believers are no longer bound to sin to the extent they have been set free by renewed minds. Believers are free to live in obedience to God and love everybody. Love is the fulfilling of law.
