During the Middle Ages, the most common idea about spread of disease was that the cause was bad air, which they called maisma. Believe it or not, one result of this belief was that medieval people bathed a lot.

There were no antibiotics, so any disease that we might consider a mild problem could kill a person. People died from infected pimples and blisters. Surprisingly, the people of the middle ages were rather clean, because they believed cleanliness was next to godliness. But they had no clue when it came to the causes of diseases.
