While the early 1800s seems like a long time ago, there was actually quite a lot of communication. People got their information and entertainment from reading: books, magazines, and newspapers were popular with those who were literate. People also went to the theater-- there were no movies, but there were live stage plays and public readings of literary works or poetry. And music was very popular too, with people going to public events where there were entertainers or where everyone sang as a group.

By the 1840s, the telegraph was perfected, allowing news and information to be sent much faster across longer distances. But prior to that, news was still transmitted, although by messengers on horse-back (or in horse-drawn carriages). It took longer, but since people had no expectation of speed, the fact that it might take a few days to get the news didn't bother them.
