The rights they sought to defend by this action was the right to hold others forever in bondage as slaves. It seems strange that such activity was deemed essential to defend when only a small minority owned the slaves in Alabama. Most citizens were in fact small subsistence farmers who had nothing to gain and much to lose by going to war in support of the ideals of large cotton plantation interests.
