Meat was very scarce - the land was too poor to sustain large numbers of animals, so people ate chickens and fish with their staple diet of bread. At festivals, animals were sacrificed - ploughing oxen too old to work, and some rich men donated some animals too. After the animals were sacrificed, the guts were burnt for the gods (the clever Greeks claimed they preferred it!) and the meat was barbecued and apportioned to those attending the religious festival.
