Colonists made a living by farming. There was plenty other jobs too. Like lumberman, fisherman, miners, and craftsmen. The colonist worked hard. There saying was " If you don't work you don't eat." The Roanoke colonists came back to their village and found that the word croaton was carved on a gatepost. Their whole village was destroyed. After that no one ever saw the Roanoke ever again. There bodies and bones were no were to be found. These people had very important jobs to do.

A good example of "making a living" Is like having a job. Every colonist had a special job to do. Even the children. Women often cooked and cleaned and watched the children. Everyone had an important job. Some other jobs that the colonists made a living was by trading. When the colonists traded they often traded goods. Goods are known as dried tobacco corn wheat and rice. Tobacco is also known as the cash crop. Colonists sold tobacco and made a living. Many of the colonists didn't know tobacco was harmful.
