Before the railroads were built farmers had to transport their produce in horse drawn wagons. This limited their market area to the distance a wagon could conveniently move their goods. With the coming of the railroad they were able to ship their produce all across the country thus opening up a much greater marketing area and increasing their profits.

The Railroad Co. misused the government land grants, which the railroads sold to other businesses rather than to settlers, as the gov. intended to do. The railroads also entered into formal agreements to fix prices, which helped keep farmers in their debt. They also charged different customers different rates, often demanding more for short hauls than they did for long hauls.

The transcontinental railroads was financed by the Railway Act of 1863, which financed the construction of the railroad through loans and land grants.
Yes, land grants were given to railroad companies by the federal government to encourage railroad construction in the 19th century. These grants provided companies with vast tracts of land, which they could sell or use to finance the building of railroads. The most notable example is the Pacific Railway Act of 1862, which facilitated the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad by granting land along the route. This strategy aimed to promote westward expansion and economic development.
