The pre-Christian Roman religion, although a personal one in one sense, was also a state religion. The prosperity and good of the empire depended on the worshiping and sacrificing and respecting of the state gods. If they were not honored, they would take their protection from Rome The Christians refused to honor the state deities and therefore, in the minds of many Romans, helped to bring about the misfortunes of the empire culminating in the fall of the western part. Remember, too, that this was only one contribution to the fall of Rome. There were many other factors acting together that helped end western Rome.
