Slaves were not allowed real weddings in churches, they only were allowed to have a "ceremony" called "jumping the broom," in which the bride and groom jumped over a broom together to signify that they were then married. But this did not stop many slave owners from later selling the man or the woman away to someone else, and separating the couple, without them having any say in the matter.
