The Tyrrhenian Sea was ancient Rome's main shipping area. Rome's port of Ostia was on the Tyrrhenian, where goods from all over the empire entered Rome. There were other port cities on that sea coast of Italy, in addition to the resort cities around the Gulf of Naples. The Tyrrhenian served Rome both for business and pleasure.
When Rome's expansion had come to the end and it has been reduced to what it had started out with (Italy), the 3rd last Roman Emperor Diocletian, split Rome in half (West and East, leaving the wealthier east-side to himself). By this time, Rome had been continuously invaded by the Barbarians from Britain, the French from the north, and the Mongolians led by Genghis Kahn from Asia. The Roman Empire is said to have been ahniliated when they had rejected the pleed of help from the Western Rome, as it had been overun with Barbarians. Then at at 476 AD the Eastern city of Constanopilae fell with Rome's last ever emperor Constantine XI marking the end of the once great Empire of Rome.

Cleopatra had nothing to do with changing Rome's history from republic to empire. Rome was already an empire under the republican form of government. Because Cleopatra was the last queen of ancient Egypt and was defeated by Rome, her country became another Roman province -- an addition to Rome's empire. What she did do, was to help bring down the republic and enable Octavian to establish the principate.

Gold trade did not help the Roman Empire to develop.
Julius Caesar did not establish the ancient Roman empire. He did help expand the territory that ancient Rome had conquered. Many historians have said that the beginnings of Rome as an empire came with the final defeat of Carthage. This gave Rome control over a vast area in the western Mediterranean Sea.
There were 2 reasons:1. If they were to join Rome, they could be a source of troops to help defend the borders of the Empire.2. They fought and defeated them to expand the perimeter of the Empire.
Rome changed government over the yers and soon ended up being a kingdom, a republic and then an empire. (sorry if this doesn't help!)
