It was named after the lost city of Atlantis.

To be more specific, the waters surrounding the large island of Atlantis was known as the Atlantis Sea.
Plato's writings were the first ACCEPTED notes regarding Atlantis, but other cultures from that era wrote about it as well.
The father of history "herodotus"

recorded the name
in Greek texts "Clio (History, Bk I, 202)", it mentions the waters beyond the Straits of Gibraltar is said to be known as the Atlantis Sea.

To make a long story short, a translator translated the name incorrectly to read Atlantic instead of Atlantis.
