How did the Battle of the Bulge effect the US?

It scared the Military commanders. No intelligence assesment had considered that Germany had any of the forces available at this late stage in the war to launch a counter offensive. When it began, the Allies were simply taking a breather until their supply lines had an opportunity to advance and consolidate, the top brass really thought that the war was over.

During World War II, the Battle of the Bulge, occurring from December 1944 to January 1945, had a generally negative effect on America. Led to believe that Germany was very nearly defeated and would soon be overwhelmed by Allied troops from East and West, many Americans were shocked by the major German offensive. Even though that offensive failed, few henceforth had any doubt that the war would continue much longer than was previously thought.

One short-term effect was to shock the Allied home-populations with the surprise of a German offensive and the realization that the war was not going to be over as quickly as they had thought. A long-term effect was that the Soviet Union was able to occupy more territory in Eastern and Central Europe than it otherwise would have, since the Germans used up their last reserves in the 'Bulge' rather than on the Eastern Front.

The Sigfried Line was sometimes referred to as "The Dragon's Teeth", for two reasons:

This line was heavily defended, however. There were machine gun encampments every 150ft, and sniper towers with MG-42 placements and snipers. This is where the majority of casualties took place in the Battle of the Bulge.

However, this battle was the final turning point in the war that sealed Nazi Germany's fate.

The Allies celebrated V-E Day less than 4 months later.
