Altho we don't have clear numbers, it appears that about a third of Europeans died from the plague. The principal effect of the plague was to create a labor shortage which tended to push wages higher, despite the best efforts of the authorities to the contrary.

How Did the Black Death Impact On Medieval Society?

Intro

The Black Death, also known as the Bubonic Plague started in the East as early as 1340. Many people in Europe heard rumours about the plague in the East, but rumours were very common and were usually not very credible. The symptoms of the Black Death started with the swelling of glands in the groin or the armpit. These were called Buboes and swelled to the size of an egg or a small apple! Next the person would develop dark patches around his body and feel very ill and throw up. Finally the disease would attack the nervous system, causing great pain. 5 days after the buboes had appeared the victim usually died. You knew if you had survived if the Buboes burst, showing you had successfully fought of the plague. This disease was carried by fleas on black rats, and spread by these fleas biting people. The Black Death is to be distinguished from another disease at the time, called the pneumonic plague. This disease was even more evil than the Bubonic Plague and attacked the lungs, killing in 2 days. Medieval society was altered in many ways by the Black Death.

The Black Death severely impacted on industry. The plague caused damage that took 200 years to fix! The most important factor was that there were less people to work because they had died! Before the Black Death, a horse costed £2, but after, because there were lots of horses to share round, the price of horses dropped to an astonishing 33p! Less people also meant a lack of workers to look after Lords' land! This caused people to demand more money to work, knowing the Lords would have to agree or else they would not have any workers. Wages in the village of Cuxham, Oxfordshire were at roughly £4 per year, and then rose to about £13 pounds in the middle of the Black Death. Larger wages caused people to work for fewer days, causing a major decline in work. Two years after the Plague the number of working days dropped from 1400, to roughly 10! This caused many expenses to Lords, because they were paying people triple salary for a very little amount of work! The little amount of people working caused less harvest, which in turn caused problems with the poor.

Another aspect of medieval society is the rich vs. the poor. The poor were affected very differently than the rich as I mentioned earlier with the Lords. Because there was less food, the price of food rose, creating major food shortages for towns and cities, making the peasants struggle. Luckily, the peasants felt special because they had survived, and were not afraid to stand up to Lords and Barons. As I mentioned earlier the aristocrats had trouble employing people to work on their land without bankrupting themselves. The fact that the peasants weren't afraid to stand up to them, and that they could get away with it because the Lords needed workers! The peasants felt that they had some sort of power over the rich, and weren't afraid to use it!

These problems caused long and short term results. The main short term result was that trade had stopped, and this greatly affected society. Busy streets were covered with bodies, and many people were left in a state of shock because of the sudden illness. There were not enough people to look after animals and crops, so they died too. In some villages, there were so little people left that they completely abandoned their village and moved to another!

There were many long term results, which were devastating. The Black Death stayed in Britain for a long time, being an Endemic disease. In the two years it stayed in England, the plague killed 1.5 million people, roughly 1/3 of the population.

It affected it a great deal. People who had skills were lost to the disease, but it also allowed those left alive to fill in the gaps. This means that people could improve their station in life from what it had been. It allowed the growth of new ideas and new ways to do things.

Whole towns were killed and those left were able to gain more property, thus, more wealth in the long run.
