The code breakers at Bletchley Park cracked the German code by reverse engineering a captured enigma machine. Their radar and observer system was the best in the world at that time, allowing the fighter squadrons to meet the Nazi bombers before they could reach their projected targets. Even though the air campaign strained the RAF's resources almost to the breaking point, the strain it put on the Luftwaffe forced it to switch to nighttime area bombing over London and other major cities in a terror bombing campaign, hoping to break civilian morale.
