The Reason the English gained control over the points of interest is because the English had a much better location of their colonies, closer to the points of interest. They also had a very rapid growing population in their colonies and outnumbered most of the other colonies. On top of all of that they didn't take part in the 7 years war which weakened a lot of their enemies who wanted those points of interest.
