Colonists got the food they ate by fishing and hunting
Depending upon the colonists in question (i.e. the British subjects that colonized America) the indigenous tribesmen aided them in the cultivation of maze or corn in addition to hunting game and foraging for wild berries and such. Secondly, some shipments of food and supplies were sent from England but often too late. (Jamestown)
