The Spanish came to Central America and delivered diseases such as Smallpox, Measles and Influenza to the Aztecs. The Aztecs, unlike the Spanish, were definitely not immune to the diseases and caught them, making them weak and forcing them to lose the battle between them.
Although the Aztecs captured and sacrificed many of the Spanish, the Spanish resulted in taking over the capital city of Tenochtitlan and defeating all the Aztecs.
The Spanish at one point tried to spread the Catholic religion throughout Mexico, forcing Aztecs to learn more about God and the Bible. If children didn't learn their lesson about it, they were punished. They were forced to stop worshiping their gods and celebrating their festivals.

The Aztecs had thousands of warriors when Cortes and his 600 Conquistadors defeated the Aztecs and captured their capital, Tenochtitlan. Diseases, such as smallpox, measles, and influenza ended up being Cortes's best weapon. Ninety percent of all Aztecs died from the European diseases.
There is a common misconception stating that Aztecs confused the Spaniards for gods; in fact the Aztecs knew they were men, but were curious to find out what were their motives. Unfortunately, Cortes and his conquistadors were greedy conquerors in search for gold and ultimately destroyed the Aztec empire.

However, after the Spanish leader Cortes murdered their king and started looting all the wealth, primarily gold. Despite the Aztec's sophisticated society, they were no match for the conquistadors. Along with the Spanish conquistadors "conquerors" came missionaries, in an attempt to convert the Aztecs. Not long after the the Spanish arrived, the Aztec population was reduced to 10%. Simply put, the Aztecs were no match for the Spanish.
