After the death of Charlemagne there was very little government left to protect the people from the attacks of the vikings and other "barbarian" groups. So "Nobles" and Kings created the mutual contract system of feudalism where the kings would use knights from the nobles to fight off invading groups. In return the knights (nobles) would receive land and other benefits from the king.
The vikings caused people to build castles and contributed to the rise of feudalism. They caused people to build walled towns. The Vikings affected European society by forcing small groups or tribes to being working together to protect themselves. Vikings, also known as Northmen or Norsemen, were groups of Germanic tribes living in far northern Europe. Vikings were fierce warriors who would sail to the south and west and attack (and in some cases settle in) other European lands. Because of this, many Europeans feared Vikings. This fear led in part to the building of many castles, walled towns, and the development of feudalism.

European serfdom was part of feudalism, which did not exist in the pagan lands of the Vikings until the coming of Christianity, at with time the Viking age was pretty much over. So, if there were serfs, they were not Vikings. The Vikings owned slaves, but the slaves were not Vikings, and they were also not serfs.
