How did the airplane change warfare?

A completely non historical or scientific answer: Air travel made it easier for soldiers to send and receive supplies. They allowed a birds eye view of the enemy gave those using them an advantage by marking their coordinates and passing on the information. As planes evolved and changed it provided a way to remain unseen by the enemy, carry and shoot missiles and drop bombs..... faster evacuation for the casualties.

The first big change that airplanes made to warfare was in intelligence gathering and reconnaissance.

Before airplanes became widely used, it was common for observers to go aloft in tethered balloons to see enemy troop movements. This has several disadvantages, primarily due to the fact that the balloons could not be steered or controlled and so, gave observers a very limited range of view. Airplanes could be flown freely where ever they were needed, even going across enemy lines.

It did not take long for pilots to figure out that while they were over there, they could shoot down the enemies observation balloons.

At first this was done with small hand-held fire arms, but engineers were soon permanently mounting guns on the aircraft.

As is the nature of any warfare technology, the ante was soon upped as pilots began shooting at each other to stop the enemy from learning about their troop movements. Soon fighter aircraft were being purpose built for this duty.

Bombing was the other obvious use for aircraft. The early observation pilots found that with skilled timing, they could drop grenades and other small hand-held bombs onto specific targets within the enemy forces. Machine gun nests and command structures were popular targets. Soon, both sides of WWI were designing larger and larger aircraft to care more and more bombs.

Aviation has changed the face of warfare forever. Due to the airplanes influence, battle fronts can move by hundreds of miles in a day, battles and even whole wars can be fought and won without a single ground troop movement, naval engagements can take place without the opposing ships ever seeing each other directly. The fog of war is lifted, as military commanders have a previously unimaginable amount of information about the battlefield. It is not without its dark side however, as air war also can put civilians in much more danger, aerial bombardment can be a very inaccurate attack vector and often leads to unintended civilian casualties.
