On Aug. 29, 1861 Commodore Stringham's landing units took Forts Hatteras and Clark, gaining the control of Hatteras Canal.
On Feb.4, 1862 an infantry division under Gen. Ambrose Burnside was concentrated in the Pamlico Lagoon and, on Feb. 7 they attacked and seized the Roanoke Island,
Successively the Federals conquered Elizabeth City (Feb.10), New Bern (March 14), Washington (NC March. 21, Beaufort and Fort Macon ( Apr.26), but they failed to reach the vital railroad Richmond-Wilmington.
There were mixed reviews by the North at the beginning of the Civil War that the Anaconda Plan was a viable plan. The plan was proposed by Winfield Scott, General-in-Chief.
