The Roman Empire could easily accomodate the then Christian God (Son of God) because it could directly be compared to one of their own gods. Christianity grew stronger and soon it became clear that there wasn't room for other inferior gods. The other Roman gods received less and less attention when people realised that they only needed one. The Roman attitude towards Christianity drastically changed when a Roman Empiror converted to Christianity.
