Originally they traveled using a dog pulled Travois. There were problems with this mode of transportation because the dogs were hard to control, and they would take off after a rabbit and spill the contents of the travois in their pursuit of it. Dogs were not very strong and when they held a large community hunt the women were forced to make several trips back and forth to get everything.

When they acquired use of the horse or "God Dogs," it made travel and their way of life much easier because the horses were extremely strong in comparison to the weaker dogs and they were so much easier to control. Some historical accounts state that once the Cheyenne moved out onto the Prairies and they began to use horses to hunt that many of the men trained their horses so well that they guided them with their knee movements.
