How did the cold war affect the relationship the US had with the rest of the world?

During the Cold War, almost every nation was aligned with one side or the other, and they received military aid, economic aid, and lots of pressure from their patron, whether the US or the USSR, to do their part for the alliance. Some countries experienced terrible wars, particular the two Koreas and the two Vietnams. There were many smaller skirmishes, such as the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba.

In a decade, rivaling political parties would form and Afghanistan would become dependent on both nations. After Afghanistan was taken over by a communist regime, the Soviet Union decided to invade the region and put in place their own rule. After the conflict was over, Afghanistan had lost most of its infrastructure and about .5 to 1 million were dead and many more were refuges. The US and Soviet Union did little to help the region leading to the Taliban to take over. This is a unique case, but the basics are similar. The US and Soviet Union would spread their ideologies and technology with third world nations, but they wanted to make sure that they had political power of the region.
