The communist party in China has never been popular. They over threw the Emperor and took over the government. It was to go along with the program or die. They had "reeducation " camps for people and in these they were to learn how to be communists. A communist government controls all aspects of a persons life and the very essence of this type of government is control over the people they govern.

Only about 7,000 survived. The Long March became a symbol of the bitter hardships Communists would endure before they finally gained power in 1949.I think it is also important in Chinese history because of the hardships that the Communists had to go through to finally gain power.
The Communist Revolution in China happened (and, eventually, succeeded on a very large scale) for numerous reasons. Principally, the corruption and disorganization among the Communist's enemies should be noted. Equally important were the efficiency and the compassion of the Communists themselves, who rallied many to their banner who had been suffering for years from the Nationalists or other traditional leaders of regions in China.

China and Russia not only were neighboring countries, but in the post-WW 2 era they also both were ruled by a Communist party. The Western countries in that period mostly supported the Chinese regime that had been driven off by the Communist forces to the isle of Taiwan, so Communist chairman Mao had only his fellow-Communists in Russia to turn to to help mainland China get back on its feet. The Russians on their part were of course happy to gain influence in a country as large and central in Asia as China.
