The Dutch had an island in the Caribbean named St. Eustatius, in the Dutch Antilles, or the Leeward Islands. This was a busy port during the revolution as entrepreneurs brought in goods the colonists needed and warehoused them until American smugglers and blockade runners came and loaded these cargoes to make the run to America. There were two British islands only about ten miles away, close enough to have to watch this going on. The trade was technically illegal but the governor of St Eustatius ignored it. Eventually the Dutch declared war against England, along with Spain, and Russia was about to do so, when the British finally gave up.
