The North was an increasingly industrial zone that would not have been able to use slavery, even if they believed in it. They wanted mobile skilled labour, much of it arriving from Europe. They were also wanting to protect their manufacturing industry from cheap imports, on which they raised tariffs.

The South was farming country, where slavery was the mainstay of the vastly profitable cotton industry, responsible for half the exports of the USA. The South had very little manufacturing industry, so it wanted cheap imports, and resented the tariffs, which looked like the North taxing the South.

The two sides disagreed so sharply that it became necessary to maintain a balance between the number of slave-states and free states, so that neither side dominated Congress.

The development of the northern colonies and the southern colonies were very different. The south had good land to grow crops and developed the plantations system. The plantations were many acres of cotton, tobacco, rice, sugar, indigo and the production of molasses and because of the need for workers slavery was used. The planters lived very well in huge houses, had the best that life could give them, and used tutoring for their children. The northern colonies land wasn't as good for the agricultural use, so they turned to shipping and industrial creation. Some colonists were able to have cash crops, but not to the extent of the plantations in the south. The cities were important places for the north because most were port cities and the shipping industry provided work and brought in supplies. Slavery was not important and often the ships were the one place in the colonies that African Americans were treated equally. Socially the two areas were different as well. The southern plantations were often far apart so people tended to have visitors stay over and have dances or parties. The northern colonies because of the city had many activities that people could do or attend. Even today the differences between the two types of areas still exist to some extent. History never quite leaves , but shadows the present.
