The northern people wanted the south to be reconstructed and returned to the Union as soon as possible, for the most part. But many wanted to see the south suffer as much as possible. The south was destroyed, and many innocent people were left destitute. Wiser heads prevailed in Washington, because the north knew that dealing too harshly with the defeated south could cause another war in less than a generation, and the country may be destroyed this time.

what was the attiude of the south toward Reconstruction? The South was not open to Reconstruction at all. The North had won the Civil War and one thing that they attempted to change about the South was the issue of slavery. After the amendment was passed to abolish slavery, they South did not comply with it. The black codes were passed by Jackson in order to regulate or control African American affairs and groups such as the Klu Klux Klan came up which tortured and killed numerous Aferican Americans.
Reconstruction hurt the north because the south had a large supply of cheap labor. They also had better climate allowing crops to grow for a longer period.
