How did the railroads change time in the US?

Railroads made travel between towns and cities easier and faster. Before the popularization of railroads, each area had it's own time based on noon being when the sun was straight up in the sky. This led to some confusion about travel times and such, so they made set time zones for areas to group together under.

Every large town set it's 'Local time' by when the sun was directly overhead at midday. This means that if you travel 1000 miles time will be around 1 hour different between these two point. Railroads trains travelled between distant towns and needed to work to a standard timetable. 'Local time' had to be sacrificed for 'Standard time' and there are a number of time zones in USA since it is so wide.

Railroads made the first way of recording standardized time. This gave a more accurate measurement of telling time so that there was no more confusing being experienced from one rail station to the next.

In the United States, one of the major railroad breakthroughs was the completion of the transcontinental rail system that connected the East coast of the USA to the west coast. It should be noted that non stop travel by rail from the east to the west actually began first west of the Mississippi.
